What is the minimum age for entry in BHSAD?
There are no age restrictions as such, however, to enter British Higher Education Programmes you need to show your School leaving certificate(s) or equivalent.
Is there distance learning form of study in BHSAD?
Distance learning formats are not provided for due to the specific nature of creative subjects, particularly design. The official position of the School is that to achieve significant success in design study using only distance methods is practically impossible.
Are there BHSAD branches in other cities?
We do not plan to open branches in view of our objective to provide the highest quality of education. Given the territorial remoteness and individual features of different regions it is difficult to guarantee universal quality standards of teaching, management and technical resources.

After submitting your documents you need to sign a contract of study. If the applicant is under 18 years of age, the presence of a parent or guardian is required to sign the contract.
Are there any restrictions for citizens of other countries on entering BHSAD?
There are no entry restrictions for citizens of other countries. Nevertheless, if the document of prior education was not issued in Russia, nostrification (confirmation of status) may be required.
Does BHSAD participate in recruitment of its graduates?
Career orientation and the dynamic growth of our graduates is a most important priority of the British Higher School of Art & Design. Networking with the industry is a differentiating benefit of our education programmes. BHSAD has a Career Centre the main task of which is graduate recruitment. What's the average age of the students?
There are no age restrictions in BHSAD. Nonetheless, our experience has set the average age of Full-time students between 17 and 25 years of age and Part-time students between 20 and 30. Among the participants on further professional education programmes you can meet students of different ages from 20 to 45 years of age.
Can I come personally to get to know the School better?
Yes, you may come to BHSAD any work day from 10.00 – 19.00. With the exception of the Winter and Summer holidays, BHSAD administration is also open on Saturdays from 11.00 to 18.00. Prior arrangement is not required except on special event days.
Are Unviersity of Hertfordshire academic awards rated in Russia?
Graduates of British Higher Education programmes in BHSAD receive international academic awards from the University of Hertfordshire, exactly the same as those given to graduates who studied in England. The status of a graduate of such a programme affirms a high level of knowledge and ability received on British programmes, from a country where the design industry is very highly developed. Therefore, the diploma or degree you receive will, undoubtedly, be highly rated in Russia and abroad.
What is the timetable of classes on Full-time?
On Foundation Level 0 classes take place 5 days a week during the day which is connected with the significant number of English language classes. Beginning from the second year (Level 1), classes with tutors take place 3 times a week during daytime.
What is the timetable of classes on Part-time?
On Level 0 classes for Part-time groups take place on workday evenings from 18.30 to 21.30 and on Saturdays. Beginning from the second year, the number of contact hours is reduced and classes take place 2 times a week mostly during daytime.
What are the requirements for applicants on the English language entry test?
The minimum requirement for applicants on the entry test is knowledge of English at Intermediate or Pre-Intermediate level. During the first year (Level 0) the students undergo intensive preparation. In this way you will have the opportunity to improve your level of English. After completing Level 0 all students take the IELTS Exam (an international testing standard for non-native speakers) which is a condition for entry on Level 1.
Who pays for taking the IELTS Exam upon completion of the preparation course?
Students pay for the test themselves. In 2007 it cost around 6000 roubles.
What does the English test consist of?
The English language entry test consists of 4 parts: listening, grammar, reading comprehension, essay writing.
May I accredit the result of the IELTS Test if I take it earlier? How long is the certificate valid for?
Yes, we accept officially issued certificates of IELTS as a confirmation of your English language level. The certificate is valid for 2 years from the moment of issue.
What are the portfolio requirements for entry onto the Foundation course?
The applicant should provide their portfolio for consideration which may contain examples of their creative works over the last few years. Requirements as to the range and style of presented works are rather broad. Any original works and projects in areas such as graphics, drawing, painting, textiles, photography, decorative arts, design, animation etc may be presented. In the event that works are below par or there is no portfolio, the applicant can be asked to undergo preparation courses in the summer months or during the whole academic year.
Which language are classes conducted in?
The education process on Levels 1 and 2 is covered by English language lecturers of different nationalities: British, Russian, Italian, Spanish and American. Nevertheless, the working language for study always remains English. On the Foundation introductory course the language of communication is either Russian or English (depending on the lecturer), however, formal requirements for using one or the other language are absent.
Can I immediately enter Level 1 or Level 2 and bypass the Foundation course?
Yes, this is possible provided that certain English language and professional requirements are met. More details about the transfer process are given in the «Entry requirements for programmes of British Higher Education» section.
Are there preparation courses in BHSAD? What subjects are studied on the preparation courses?
Extensive preparation courses start work at the end of October and last for 24 weeks. Basic preparation courses start work in the middle of January and last for 16 weeks. Provided the programmes are successfully completed, the applicant is exempt from the creative contest on the entry exams. Does BHSAD offer suspension from military service?
Unfortunately, at this moment BHSAD does not offer suspension from military service.
May I enter CPD Programmes without training in art and without professional portfolio experience?
For applicants with the minimum skills and knowledge the 2 year programmes at beginner level: Graphic Design. Introductory Course, Interior Design. Introductory Course and Fashion Design. Introductory Course are provided.
Practising designers wishing to further their knowledge in a specific area of design or to broaden their experience through further specialisation are offered various CPD Courses lasting from 1 to 2 years.
Which language is taught on CPD programmes?
CPD Programmes are taught solely in Russian. The vast majority of the teaching team working on these courses are well-known Russian designers and practicing professionals.
What diploma will I receive after completing my studies on one of the CPD Programmes?
Upon completion of your studies you will receive a Russian diploma of further education from the British Higher School of Art & Design.
